Scope and content
The Greek tanker 'Angel Gabriel' had been anchored for three days off 'Il-Gzira' point at Marsascala, waiting to enter the dockyard for repairs. On 23 September 1969, due to the strong gregale, the ship was dragged from its anchorage and crashed on the first reef. Thousands had descended on the then-quiet fishing village to see the wreck first-hand.
A photograph taken that day by the Times of Malta's Frank Attard was acclaimed internationally as one of the ten remarkable photos of 1969. It showed a human chain clutching a rope with one hand and holding a descending crew member with the other and guiding him onto dry land.
