Scope and content

The sepia-coloured image represents the Sistine Madonna, one of Raphael's most famous works. The painting is named after the church of San Sisto in Piacenza and Raphael painted it as the altarpiece for that church in 1513-1514. The Blessed Virgin Mary is flanked by St Sistus and St Barbara, with two cherubims underneath resting on their arms. Underneath this mage there is the small prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary - Blessed Queen pray for us! Overleaf, at the top between the two significant dates 1624 and 1924, there is the Marian emblem. This image is a memento commemorating the third centenary of the Canonical Institution of the Christian Doctrine under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception in St Paul's Church in Valletta in 1624.
