Wistin Abela was elected for the first time in the 1966 general election on the Malta Labour Party (MLP) ticket and was re-elected in every national vote until 1992. He had served in various roles in successive Labour governments after 1971: parliamentary secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, minister for development and he was subsequently given the portfolios of telecommunications and energy. He was finance minister between 1983 and 1987, deputy leader of the MLP and he had occupied the role of deputy prime minister between 1981 and 1982.
