Department: Customs. The Collector of Customs is reporting that Giuseppe Ciappara, Michele Grima and Basilio Genovese while passing by the road in front of the Naval Range at Rinella they heard the report of a gun and looking up saw three soldiers on the Battery one of whom appeared to be holding a rifle. Sergeant on duty at Rinella Marine Police Station on this report went to the Rinella Battery and asked Bombardier Charles Sweetman to possibly give him the names of the three soldiers, but this was not possible. Inspector on duty later investigated the case and ordered a carbine mentioned by Sweetman as a weapon used for exercise as the only one which could have been used on this occasion. Ciappara had been hit by a shot and District Medical Officer had examined and written a report stating that would was of a slight nature but liable to become serious by the consequence. Carbine was later used in the investigations but it was concluded that no there was no criminal intent in this accident. Includes sketch of carbine.
