Scope and content
This image is a subscription in the Franciscan Missionary Crusade by adopting or sponsoring a non-Christian child to be baptised. In fact the image depicts St Francis overlooking a Franciscan priest baptising several children. On each side of the image one finds an axiom: 'Saving the poor infidel children' and 'Working for the saving of souls.' Underneath the image, there is printed The Baptism of the Infidels (as non-baptised persons were referred to) and a quote from the Baptismal Rite taken from the Gospel of Matthew 28:18 - "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." At the bottom of the image, there is written in black ink the sponsor Francesca Galea, who offered the sum of 2 shillings 6 pence (equivalent to c. 34 euro cents), naming the sponsored child Rita.
