Scope and content

The image shows the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel wearing the Carmelite habit, holding in Her left arm the Child Jesus, while in Her right arm She is holding the Holy Scapular which She gave to St Simon Stock (†1265) on 16th July, 1251, telling him that whoever wore this brown scapular was sure to be saved on his death bed and receive a special protection from the Blessed Virgin. This is why in the lower part of the image there are depicted the souls in purgatory. At the back of the image, one finds a poem in three stanzas by Malta's National Poet, Dun Karm Psaila dedicated to Our Lady f Mount Carmel, while commemorating the first centenary of the formation of the Carmelite Confraternity in Alexandria (Egypt). A rubberstamp at the side indicates that the image formed part of the collection pertaining to Karmen Mikallef Buhagar.
